Our Homeschooling Activities:

Homeschooling.

I always try to push hard with the Homeschooling, early in the year, as I have learnt that the children’s sports activities take up more time, as the year progresses, -plus it takes considerable time travelling to and from the sports venues.

Paula Joy’s Illness.

Paula Joy first became ill over Christmas and she has been struggling with her health ever since then, with stomach pains, tonsillitis and tick bite fever.

March was a month where she was not able to do much school or sport. We have spent a great deal of our time seeing various doctors and having numerous tests. Although she is feeling slightly better, we are still trying to find the source of her illness.

Polo Umpires Test.

In April the children both passed their polo HPA umpires test, so they now need to get some umpiring experience, to develop this new skill. This is a very useful skill which can be put into practice, once they have completed their high school education.

Photography Experience.

As Murray John had not qualified to play in the Junior Open Golf Tournament, he worked as a photographer. He took some great photos of all the players participating in the tournament. This was a new experience for him, and one which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Horses.

Due to the heavy rains in February, we took the decision to move the horses up to higher ground, as their paddock had become a swamp.

We found a more suitable position on the farm, and got to work building pens, and a lunging ring. We also mowed an area where the children can ride and jump their horses.

In March all the horses started their walking routine, to up their fitness levels. In April they were lunged and readied for the polo season, which starts in May.

Paula Joy attended a one day eventing show in March. Unfortunately, she was not at all well and had hardly done any preparation. We dropped her experienced horse, Duke, to the lower 90cm jumping class, so that she could have an easier day. Both her horses went very well and finished the show on their dressage scores, with Duke winning his class.

In early April Paula Joy had another weekend of fun showjumping shows, on two of her horses. She took her young horse, Jenny Bee, to her first ever show and they both gained valuable experience.

Homeschooling Sports.

Golf.

Murray John has played a lot of golf these past two months and Paula Joy played on the days when she had sufficient energy.

In early April the children played in the SA Kids Heritage Golf Tournament, held at Royal Harare Golf Club. It was a three day tournament, where they each played in their respective age groups. Murray John finished 3rd and Paula Joy finished 4th.

As a result, Murray John qualified for the Callaway World Championship, which is held in California. This was a great achievement for him.

At the end of April, Paula Joy managed to qualify for the Zimbabwe Junior Open Golf Tournament, held over three days. As Paula Joy was the highest handicapped player, she was basically in the tournament to gain invaluable experience, and meet other golf players from around Africa.

The highlight of the weekend was when Paula Joy won the ladies’ long drive competition, with a drive of 234 meters. Go girl!

Tennis and Cricket.

Murray John had lots of cricket and tennis lessons during March. In April he was able to focus on his golf

Homeschooling Adventures:

Farm Life.

As we needed hay for the horses, we purchased a small baler for Murray John to learn how to use. We already have a mower, so we borrowed a tractor to mow and bale the hay required for the winter months. This kept Murray John very busy after school!

Murray John continues to service our motor bikes, operates the generator and has got the lorry and trailer ready for the polo season.

Sadly, we all miss the large farming operation we used to live on, plus all the various crops we grew.

Zimbabwe Economy.

Due to the heavy summer rains, it’s been a good agricultural season, which should boost Zimbabwe’s economy. However, with heavy rains, come lots of new pot holes! It’s very sad to see how bad our road infrastructure has become.

Going Forward.

Once the polo season starts, our lives will become extremely busy. As a family, we continually pray for a new agricultural door to open for us…

My last post is very well worth worth reading and sharing! ‘Our Amazing Homeschooling Positives – After Ten Years’.

Until next time, keep praying and may God bless you all!
